The benefits of fluoride in helping to fortify the enamel protecting our teeth and ward off harmful bacteria are well documented. The use of this naturally occurring mineral has helped lead to a decline in tooth decay since its introduction in the 1960s into products such as toothpaste, as well as being added into the public drinking water supplies of many villages, towns and cities across the United States.
So, if you’re brushing with a toothpaste containing fluoride and drinking fluoridated water, why is our dentist at Family Dentistry of Arlington Heights recommending a topical fluoride treatment during your visit?
There’s an important reason why we offer our patients — both children and adults — another application of this vital natural mineral. The variety of fluoride we use in our practice is applied in a professional strength, straight on to the teeth and exposed roots. This adds an additional layer of fortification to the teeth against cavities, which still are prevalent in the general population, especially among children and adolescents.
This added defense against decay is applied quickly, safely and pain-free, following a patient’s professional cleaning. It may come in the form of a gel, foam or varnish. Only a small amount is used and very little is swallowed directly. We will provide guidance as to how long each patient must wait after treatment to eat, drink, brush and floss.
Keep in mind that a professional fluoride application does not mean that you can cut back or stop your brushing and flossing routine, or skip regular exams and cleanings by your dentist. There’s no substitute for a regular oral hygiene regimen when it comes to protecting those precious pearly whites!
At Family Dentistry of Arlington Heights our dentist offers the most up-to-date treatment options to our patients, and topically applied fluoride is just one of them. Please contact our office today for an appointment or more information.
