Should I use dental floss before I brush my teeth? Or, is it better to floss after I brush my teeth? The answers to those questions have raged among dental aficionados for centuries. But the decision has now been declared! The members of the American Association of Orthodontists, who are as expertly well-schooled in oral care as dentists, state that recent studies have determined that flossing before brushing is the best way to remove plaque on your teeth.
At the office of Family Dentistry of Arlington Heights, our skilled dentist is an expert at diagnosing dental healthcare issues as well as providing the treatment needed to maintain excellent oral health. Your care and comfort are our top priorities, and our office staff and board-certified dentist will take as much time as you need to address your every concern and explain your options in care.
Flossing before brushing was found to remove plaque, thus increasing the area that the toothpaste’s fluoride reaches. This, in turn, strengthens the enamel, which is where decay starts. Interdental brushes, also called interproximal brushes, can be used instead of dental floss.
You can’t rely solely on visits to your dentist to keep your teeth clean and in good shape. You also play a major role in the process. This requires a dedicated daily routine of care.
Brush your teeth for two minutes following every meal and snack. If brushing isn’t possible, at least rinse out your mouth with water. Use toothpaste approved by the American Dental Association. (Look for the organization’s logo on the packaging and tube.) Floss at least once a day, preferably before your nighttime brush.
Don’t retire for the day without having brushed your teeth before you get into bed. Bacteria and particles of food will fester in your mouth overnight and prey on your teeth and gums. When it comes to your overall oral health, be in it to win it!
